Moses King Brick and Tile Works

The Moses King Brick and Tile Works in Colchester was placed on the 2002 year's "Ten Most Endangered Historic Places" list by the Landmarks Preservation Council of Illinois. Due to its rarity and significance, the Moses King Brick and Tile Works, just off North Coal Street in Colchester Illinois, has played an important role in the history and development of the brick and tile making industry. Four distinctive brick beehive kilns are on the property and are not likely to ever be reproduced, as their 250,000 bricks are held together by 8-inch-wide steel bands instead of mortar. The kilns are in severe need of attention as one kiln collapsed fall 2001 when the metal bands rusted and gave way.
